I started Frustration Jazz earlier this year, initially to put out my own music and I’ve been keeping it pretty quiet until now because of that. But after just three releases – two solo and one by The Drunken Boat – I’m really excited to be puting out the first recordings that I’m not directly involved in. David Palliser’s Lame & Free is a 3-track album of freely improvised music, played mostly on alto sax, influenced by free jazz but definitely non-idiomatic in its approach. David is a member of Melbourne free music legends Charles Ives Singers amongst other acts, as well as being an awesome painter. As for the label, I plan on keeping it pretty wide ranging with a definite bent towards sounds from outside, underneath and in-between. And as much as I like the more free and fucked-up elements of jazz, it’s NOT a ‘jazz’ label.

I played a couple of solo gigs in July, the second was at LongPlay in Fitzroy North. Contact mic’d acoustic bouzouki running into a PA, 6 strings not 8 of course, in a free-folk kind of vein. I was pretty happy with the way it went (wouldn’t share otherwise) but I reckon I’ve still got a way to go. Tim Coster was also on the bill that night, making his amazing analogue/digital looping drones, along with the debut of McKosker/Harris/Callaway – two basses and a synth, hope to hear more from those folks soon!
Album number four for The Drunken Boat has just been released on Sydney DIY label Chemical Imbalance, our first to be released by someone other than the band (I released the third one on my own label so that doesn’t count)! Side Show is three long tracks of ethno-forgery/psych/noise improvised in September 2014 and housed in handmade sleeves designed by Mitch at Chemical Imbalance. The Drunken Boat have just released their third CD-R album Birdless Tongues! Three long-form tracks of drone and soundscape, put to SD card in 2012 during the same intensive period of recording that produced Purple Perfumes… but quite different to that album. I play Indian harmonium throughout this one, Dale is on electronics and bulbul tarang (Indian banjo). Available from our Bandcamp site and at gigs, will be puting some in A. G. Picks shortly too for those in Melbourne.
I’ve just put out my second solo release via Bandcamp. Light Through Amber was partly recorded on my solid-body electric bouzouki and to my ear it’s quite a bit darker than the first album. Seven tracks recorded in 2012 and 2013. You can listen/order it here:
So I made a Bandcamp site for my solo music. My first release Long-Necked & Blue is available to purchase from said Bandcamp right now, either as a very limited CD-R or download. It’s a full-length album of solo acoustic bouzouki recordings in a free folk / improv / primitive guitar vein (only it’s bouzouki not guitar) with rebetika as the starting point but definitely not the end point. There’s probably a lot of other influences going on in there too but I try not to think about it a real lot.
The Drunken Boat released their second CD-R album in late July, continuing the Rimbaud references with the album and track titles. Sonically it’s more of a drone outing this time around, bookended by a couple of shorter noisier numbers. Recorded in 2012 before Dale went overseas for a year.
